Obama Recognizes José Andrés as Example of Immigrant Success Story

President Obama and his wife are big fans of the Spanish American immigrant José Andrés, who emigrated to the United States and became a US citizen last November. Andrés has been recognized before by the First Family as they have dined in one of his 11 popular restaurants on a consistent basis, and participated in Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign to inspire healthy eating habits in children. He’s also catered a meal for world leaders attending the G8 Summit at Camp David.

Aside from his delicious food, Obama stressed the importance of immigration reform and used Andrés an an example of the “quintessential American success story.” Andrés was born and raised in Spain, but came to America to pursue his culinary career, stating that “As immigrants, we understand better than most that to be an American is a privilege that conveys not just rights but responsibilities….We also have the obligation to give something back – to entice the American mosaic with our unique cultures, traditions, and ideas.”
