Many undocumented immigrants have no entries on their criminal record except one thing: driving without a license. For these individuals, driving without a driver’s license means they are now open to being stopped and at risk of removal (deportation).
However, starting January 2nd, 2015, an estimated 1 million California immigrants will “be able to obtain a driver’s license and car insurance for the first time since 1993,” according to the Huffington Post. Immigrants are the backbone of the country, and yet, getting to and from work can turn into a nightmare if they are subject to any random police controls.
Although California is not the first state to legalize driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants, it’s a landmark change as California has the largest population of undocumented immigrants in the nation.
